Introduction
The image contains Debian 5.0 (Lenny) and SMW+ 1.6.x. The VMware image runs on Windows and Linux systems among others.
Requirements
In order to use this VMware image, you need to download and install one of the following products:
- VMware Player-free!
- VMware Server-free!
- VMware Workstation 5.5+
- VMware ESX 3+/VMware Virtual Infrastructure
Installation and configuration
1. Install the VMware product on your machine. This can be Windows, Linux or any other operating system which is supported by your player.
2. Run your VMware product.
3. Extract the zip archive and open the .vmx file from it.
- This will boot the image and a Debian linux and the necessary environment will be started.
4. You are prompted by the player to download and install its updates. Since this is not mandatory, we recommend that you click on the "Do Not Download" option to proceed on without installing any updates.
5. The player will now boot. Once this process is completed, the image's current IP address will be displayed together with the complete URL as shown below.
6. Enter this URL into your browser to gain access to the wiki.
Additional information about the wiki installation
When the system is started, a Solr server which listens to port 8983 is also started. This service is needed for the faceted search. The index is built at boot time.
If you use the wiki within a productive environment, you should run the indexing script as a cronjob.
If you have a large wiki, you can update only the index, instead of rebuilding it from scratch.
This image also includes a TripleStore Basic (contains Jena), which can be started at system start-up (see TripleStore below).
The wiki will be initialized automatically.
Pressing the Ctrl+ Alt key combination returns you to your computer while pressing the Ctrl+ G key combination lets you give input to your virtual machine.
TripleStore
This image also includes a TripleStore Basic (contains Jena). Steps to activate TripleStore in VMware:
- Open the /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php
- Goto top of the file and change TSC_MODE line to:
- $TSC_MODE = 'on';
- Download the MySQL Connector/J
- Unzip the file mysql-connector-java-5.1.x.zip and copy the file mysql-connector-java-x.x.x-bin.jar into the lib folder of your TSC installation (Default directory: /usr/local/share/Ontoprise/tsc/lib. Otherwise the TSC is not able to access the MySQL database
- To start the Triple Store at system start-up run: /root/add-tsc-service.sh
- To start the Triple Store run: /etc/init.d/tsc.sh start
Bring SMW+ up-to-date
After you have installed SMW+ make sure that your installation is up-to-date and all needed services are running. It is important that you follow these instructions before giving other users access to the Wiki or starting productive work. We also highly recommend to repeat these instructions from time to time.
Users and passwords
The system contains a normal user wiki and the root account. Only the wiki user can log in initially, but once logged in, one can become a root user as described below.
This is how you log in to the Wikiserver as a wiki user
- Wikiserver login: wiki
- Password: wikipasswd
Once logged in as a wiki user you can successively log in again and become a root user using the credentials below: Note that becoming a root user, requires you to first login as a wiki user:
- Wikiserver login: root
- Password: wikipasswd
/etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php
The database's root account has the same password as that of the wiki user.
Within the wiki, there is an account for the WikiSysop, which uses the following credentials:
- Wikiserver login: WikiSysop
- Password: root
Changing keyboard layout
The default keyboard layout is US-International (QWERTY).
If you use a different keyboard layout, you can gain access to the VMware image via an SSH login instead of using the login of the console within the VMware product. This is so because the SSH login usually has your system's keyboard layout preconfigured, so that you don't need to configure this manually as described below..
However, if you intend to use the VMware console, you can change the keyboard layout after you login as a root user as described above. Once you do this, you should issue this command on the VMware console:
- loadkeys de This will for example use the German layout. You can accordingly enter another code instead of "de", in line with your desired layout.
To change the keyboard layout at boot time, become root user and issue this command:
- install-keymap de
This will install the German layout. You can again accordingly enter another code instead of "de", in line with your desired layout.
Shutting down VMware
There are two ways of shutting down VMware:
1. Select Exit within the application. This has the following effect:
- The current state of your virtual machine is saved. When you run the machine again at a later point of time, the system will restore boot and proceed from the state saved in the previous session.
haltinto the VMware commander. This has the following effect:
- The current state of your virtual machine IS NOT saved. When you run the machine again at a later point of time, the system will this time start all the required processes.
Removing the SMW+ 1.6.0 image
Click on the right mouse button to remove your virtual machine from the library, or to delete it from disk.
Upgrade information
We encourage you to always keep your installation of SMW+ up-to-date; this ensures that you have always the latest features and bug fixes. Use the Wiki Administration Tool (already part of SMW+) to perform the upgrade.
